Malacca – a portrait in 7 pictures

Malacca is definitely more then just the famous Dutch Church. Influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch, British and the Malaysian culture it developed it’s own character.

Culture. Colonial buildings can be found everywhere in the city and show the beauty of this historic place. Also is Malacca a meltingpot of different cultures, religions and especially famous for the Baba Nyonya (the children of Chinese men and Malay women) with their special food and traditions.

Religion. With Buddhist and Hinduist temples, Mosques and the famous St. Paul's and the Christ Church Malacca represents the diversity in Malaysia.

Lifestyle. With nice promenades along the river and the canals Malacca has spots to sit down, relax and just look at all the colorful graffiti on the houses. Where is a better place to hang out behind the hostel and drink some beers with an group of Malaysians?

Disparity. Although Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage site there are a lot of buildings falling apart while there are new and expensive hotels directly next to them. Due to the short distance to Singapore and Malaysia it's a favourite weekend destination to escape the noise of a big city.

Abandoned. Malacca is still a often visited city but in the last year's tourist more and more left it out and just went to Georgetown. Places are falling apart because of missing maintenance but on the other hand it's quite because of the missing tourists.
